They Say that Tinted Contacts are in this Year

Finally! The time of the year that we have all been waiting for has arrived….springtime. Ah springtime, the time of year when the grass turns green, the trees begin to bud and a housewife’s thoughts turn to that great American tradition…spring house cleaning.

Just two short months ago. I wrote a column about the winter blahs. Now it is time to write another column about the blahs, only this time it is the spring house cleaning blahs. In comparison to the spring house cleaning blahs, the winter blahs are a picnic. I would like to know who the clown was that started this great American tradition. I have a special list with a special position on that list for his or her name.

Being the observant person that I am, I noticed that the sun was shining and the birds were chirping the other day…a sure sign of spring. So I decided to get up enough nerve to do the one thing that I have been putting off all winter. I decided to open all the drapes and let the sun shine in. Well, let me tell you, when I got all the drapes open. I couldn’t figure out if the windows were dirty or I needed glasses. Everything on the other side of the windows looked completely out of focus. So, I grabbed the Windex and cleaned a spot and sure enough, my greatest fear had come true, it was the dirt on the windows that made everything look fuzzy outside. Up until then I had been silently praying that the problem could be cured with a new pair of glasses. Now I have to either clean the windows and house or try to convince everyone who comes to visit this summer, that they need glasses.

Walls and Closets are other areas that get completely out of control during the winter. For some reason, when there is snow outside the walls in the house look fine. But the minute the sun shines in, they start looking like the house has been used as a winter shelter for the monkey population from the Denver Zoo. It will never cease to amaze me how four and five foot kids can leave fingerprints on the walls, seven feet high. And dark winter closets are the perfect mating place for clothes hangers. Let one winter go by and in the spring, the wire clothes hangers have in creased three-fold. Not only are they all hook- ed together, they are lying on the floor, keeping the boots company, and hanging around on the bottom of the clothes.

I am very proud of the fact that 1 have started my favorite spring pastime…housecleaning. Last week, I spent one full day, cleaning two china closets that were suffering from winter kill. At this pace I figure it could take me all summer to do my spring housecleaning, and as everyone knows, you can’t spring house clean in the summer, it would be against our great American tradition.

So it looks like I have two alternatives, either speed up my work habits or make a list of optometrists to pass out to my houseguests this summer…after giving it very little thought, I have decided on the latter.
